Do you have to wear new clothes for Umrah

Umrah is a religious act and a pilgrim performing it must be spiritually and physically clean. These journeys whether Hajj or Umrah are the essential journeys in the life of a believer so one must perform it with enthusiasm and through the pure heart. However, to perform Umrah or Hajj, pilgrims are required to wear attire known as Ihram. Ihram means clothes that must be pure or fresh. Pure means used clothes but clean and fresh means new clothes.

For men Ihram is a two piece white unstitched cloth that is required to wear by male pilgrims to conduct the journey of Umrah or Hajj. Ihram has two pieces of white cloth where one is used to cover the upper body called Rida and the other piece is called Izar that is used to cover the body from waist to ankle. After being in the state of Ihram some things became haram for the pilgrims and pilgrims have to avoid them otherwise they are liable to pay Dam (plenty). Some of the acts that became haram after being in state of Ihram include trimming of nails, proposal for marriage, sexual intercourse, looking or touching women, so and so forth.
For women there Ihram is their clothes. If they wish to wear new clothes they can wear them otherwise they can wear used clothes as well. On reaching Miqat they have to do the intention of Umrah as well as of wearing Ihram. After being in state of Ihram certain things became haram on women as well some of them include: trimming nails, covering hands and face, sexual intercourse, fitting clothes so and so forth. However, you have to make sure to wear or take such clothes that make you comfortable as the weather in Saudi is hot and humid. You should avoid fancy clothes and jewelry as Ihram means unity and equality in front of the creator. Moreover, if women are having menstruation then she has to remain in her hotel until she refrains the normal state as said by Prophet (S.A.W) to Aisha (R.A) when she menstruated during Umrah Prophet S.A.W said do everything that the pilgrims do, but do not circumambulate the House until you become pure.

However, comfortable shoe wear is the essential thing that plays an important role while being in the Hajj and Umrah journey. While being in state of Ihram men needs to wear a chapel that exposes the foot and ankle but for women they can wear shoes or chapels or even socks while being in state of Ihram. So it is necessary to wear the comfortable clothes as well as shoes so that you can perform your rituals in an easy manner. Moreover, Hajj and Umrah are the pious journeys and performing it with spirituality and enthusiasm is everything.
